New Benny & Björn song for Rival Hotel website (Updated)

2nd Best To None

2nd Best To None – performed by the staff at the Rival Hotel

Look out for the new track appearing on Rival’s website shortly (Update: 06 May 09 – song now online), with an accompanying video resulting from the shoot that we heard about recently.

A download of the song is available for some regions from CDON and Bengans. Thanks to Ian Cole for the download info.

Update: From BBC News 7 May 2009

"We haven’t done any pop songs for a long time," the musician said.

Andersson had the idea to record Second Best To None last September at the Hotel Rival’s fifth birthday party, where the workforce had gathered.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm," he said. "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that’s what I did.

"And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It’s just a lot of fun and it’s taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else."

  1. First reaction was it sounded very Eurovision!

After 4-5 listens I love it. Very powerful chorus but the verse takes some getting used to. No doubt I will be humming the chorus all day.

Benny’s in the back row of the group shot.

Bartender is very cute – forget the comfy beds and a teddy bear in each room, I’m going to get the best seat in the bar!

Must have been fun for the staff to make the video and record the song.

  2. I just viewed and listened.I like the song… wonder if this song or the tune are newly written or if it has a ‘history’.

  4. Benny loves that female choir sound, doesn’t he?

The song sounds very circa I Am The City/Under Attack.

And to think I’ll be at the hotel in about 3 and a half weeks!!!!

  5. I’ll see what I can do, Monique! Though I have a feeling he might be more interested in me than you girls 😉

  6. No no Ian, you are wrong. You can see the tension between him and the blond girl in the video. He’s ours!

  7. I’m not sure yet whether I like it. Right, sounds like late Abba but not that artificial. Is it really new stuff? Might have been discovered in Mrs. Hanser’s desk: "Oh look, Benny, here is another leftover, shall I throw it away?" – I’m not serious, quite a funny song. Not likely to be played by BAO…

  8. ….Sooo catchy…makes me miss abba more sometimes..thank god we have SOMETHING!! Although still hoping for one more cd from Frida….with Jon Lord…hmmm what happened to that idea…in the toilette perhaps???!!!

  9. They’ve still got it. This is the most ABBA-sounding B&B work since….hmmm. probably ABBA. Come on B&B…it’s time for one last pop album, with a really good artist…please
    ???

  10. Well as far as Darrens question as to the songs history, it certainly has some of "The day before you came" in there and I would guess that this is most likely a regig of a not quite made it to the album ABBA track.
However maybe we are just missing the irony? It is so eighties eurovision pop. It is funny, very funny, out there off the wall funny in terms of hotel websites. Love it to bits!

  11. It’s sounds to me like an unused song from " The Mini Musical " The Girl with The Golden Hair! It has a feel that it’s a left over from ABBA The Album! I love it!! Pop Pop Pop!!

  12. My Swedish is a bit rusty these days, but from visiting both those sites, it seems that UK residents can’t purchase this mp3. Such a shame. Does Benny realise how many fans he still has that hanker after this stuff?

  13. I love the piano intro when arriving at Rival’s current website. I wish it was available to buy. It’s too cute a tune to never be heard again… I hope it stays somewhere within the revised website. Even though it is a very short tune, does anyone know if it’s ever been available to buy… even as a ring-tone?

  14. I love it! it’s really the most ABBA song since gemini’s "copy love"..and I suppose it was written during the last ABBA years…the line "my season in the sun" reminds "you owe me one".
Those 2 guys are simply pop genius!

  15. I think that if this were a discarded ABBA song, what’s resurfacing here would only be the melody, because the production is distinctly post-ABBA, in the same vein as Benny’s work on CHESS på Svenska and the Mamma Mia! movie soundtrack. And I disagree with the comment about this being like a song from "ABBA – The Album", since there’s really no defining musical theme here, like the pulse of "Take a Chance on Me", the wistful synth of "Eagle", the groove of "The Name of the Game", the smooth flow of "Move On", you get the idea. This seems like much more of a straight-up pop song than an ABBA song, which were usually more complex, at least in concept. Nonetheless, this is an excellent pop song, and Benny’s synth riffs steal the show.

  16. Looks like good fun and a real treat for the employees, I’m sure…

I can just imagine them when they’re 70 – "look at the pop video I once made with the ABBA legend Benny Andersson" 😉

"Now let’s go put on Mamma Mia! – The On And On And On edition…"

  17. Typically a poppy Andersson/Ulveaus song. I love it! Could be a winner at Eurovision, if audiences these days were not looking for strange performances that is.
Someway it reminds me at the music they wrote for the Josefin Nilsson-album Shapes.

  18. Btw…Which bartender do you mean Ian? The bald one or the other one? Like them both actually:-)

  19. Great to hear this. I’m with Andrea on this – definately reminds me of You Owe Me One – the lyrics and vocal arrangement.
    Love it!

  20. I agree, this reminds me most of "You Owe Me One" (though not quite as good) Maybe pats of it were from discarded ABBA tracks from around that time, they often used to recycle. Great fun though and a contender for Eurovision anyday, can’t get that catchy lyric out of my head and only listened to it once!!!!!

  21. Andrew Lloyd Webber eat your heart out this really is just soooo catchy i can’t stop humming it!

  22. Ian I am right there with monique and sara that this absolutely gorgeous bod would pefer his cocktail shaken rather than stirred but good luck anyway. On a serious note is there any chance we can get this released as a single in the UK?

  23. I am loving this song (just watched the video for 2nd time only!) and really feel it could be a hit in the UK! Hope they do decide to release it here. By the way, has anyone else noticed the red headed girl standing next to the pillar which looks like it is in a theatre. I think she’s wearing some kind of neck scarf. Anyway, is it me or does she look a lot like Frida, circa 1978 (ABBA The Album stylie) Also, I agree that dark haired barman is totally hot!!

  25. I can’t get the song out of my head!!

It’s great to hear something completely new from B and B and brilliant to see an article on B and B headlining the entertainment section of BBC teletext today – I can say I heard it first on this site!

Since the end of Abbamail this is definitely the best site to get all the new info. Thanks a million times!

Is it Bjorn on the right in the second to last shot of the video?

  26. Benny and Bjorn are such clever boys, the rest of the hotel industry must hate them!! I hope we will be able to download it soon I love it so much.

  27. So, it would be Frida lead vocal I would think at the verses? And we’d need some kind of background thing going on at the chorus? you know a 21st century "takeachancetakeachancetakeatakeachanchanace". I’m think a minim "sec-ond best to none".
Just my thoughts in my wee Abbaland…

  28. Am I the only ABBA fan / collector who thinks the song is load of old rubbish? It’s not even good enough to go on a B side. In those days, a "song" like this by B&B would NEVER see the light of day. Musically, it’s below average to say the least. It wouldn’t even go through the Eurovision heats. Vastly disappointing, even as a commercial jingle.

  29. No hbotis, I agree with you. It’s a bit of a mish-mash. A bit rubbishy. Certainly nowhere near the standard of craftmanship of an ABBA or a BAO song. The tune goes up and down and everywhere in a very undisciplined and amateurish manner.

But I’m sure it actually *was* cobbled together roughly just for fun and it was surely composed in a very short time.

And, in the spirit of fun, it is fun! even though it wouldn’t have managed to make it to the B-side of an ABBA single way back in 1973.

  30. I’m guessing the song is very original. Sometimes folks think that the song is from unused portions of ABBA material, etc, etc.

While that idea is feasible, it’s also very possible that the song is brand new. Chances are that since it’s been so long that they wrote a pop song, it probably contains elements and ideas that Benny and Bjorn wanted to use for a long time.

In any case, I’m glad to hear it. I wanted to download the MP3, but don’t speak enough Swedish to download it from the sites. If anyone finds an english-speaking site that sells it, let me know.

Keep writing, ABBA guys. We like the songs.

  31. hbotis and Paul… I agree with you… it is far from B&B’s best (to me it sounds more like something from Ace Of Base’s early days than anything B&B would normally have done [though I’m not saying that’s a bad thing], however, I do like some of the unique flourishes in B&B’s new song — by the way, I just went to Ace Of Base’s website and heard a good new (<?) song). Anyhow, as Paul also says, this new B&B song has been done just for fun, so we shouldn’t really pick on it. "Yay" to B&B. By the way, the rough-ish shaven-bear guy at about 2.40 on the video is cute too — woof ;o)

  32. Oops… I’ve been dazzled by the afore-mentioned shaven-bear ;o) I was looking at the time to go. I meant the guy at 27 to 28 seconds. ‘Bye! :o)

  33. Love it OK not as good earlier material, take it for what is is fun, Catchy I have ordered the single.

  34. I have only dared listen to it once.

You just know that it is one of those catchy tunes that gets into your head all day and eventually drives you mad.

I guess that is the idea though when advertising a product. So on that basis then the tune is probably a great success.

  35. Guests of the hotel get a complimentary DVD featuring the slide show and 2nd Best to None that can be seen on the Rival website.
