Torchwood, Benny and Björn

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from Abba were lined up for a musical version of Doctor Who spin-off show Torchwood, according to a new book.

In it, head writer Russell T Davies reveals that he was asked about the concept and told: "They have the two chaps from Abba on board."

Davies said after he had finished laughing he asked for clarification.

He was told: "Yep. Bjorn and Benny love Torchwood." But the idea never progressed beyond the early stages.

  1. I got really excited there for a moment, John Barrowman must have been behind that bizarre collusion.
    It would have been interesting.

  2. I think it would have been naff. We want a much bigger story for the boys. Not a half-baked children’s sci-fi programme.

  3. I’m just reading John Barrowmans second autobiography and in it he mentions liking Chess and the song ‘I know him so well’ which he recorded as a duet with Daniel Boys on his last cd and also as a solo version.I haven’t seen much of Torchwood but not many childrens programmes feature a gay and also a bi adult male in a relationship with the erm action that goes along with that..sorry Ice, edit if you need to…..
A musical episode could have been different.Several shows have had a musical episode including Moonlighting and also Buffy the vampire slayer.

  4. Hi. Even though B&B aren’t doing this after all, I think that they could easily do a great score to a Science Fiction series, a Science Fiction movie, or even a children’s Science Fiction program… because, as we all know, B&B are so versatile, and have always enjoyed the challenge of doing something different, which is why us fans have been so blessed with such a wealth of musical pleasure.
    Cheers :o)

  5. Torch wood was originally billed as adult sci fi underlining Russell t davises inconsistent approach to most thins he does , I can see him writing a musical whether Torch wood would be the best vehicle I?m not sure.

  6. I would find it very good.
John Barrowman has a very good voice.
For some time I already hear his Cd’s.
Why are times not as a musical or even the soundtrack for

JACK I HOPE TO FIND A WAY TO GET BACK IANTO
AND WITH THE MUSIC OF BENNY & BJÖRN!
BENNY AND BJORN AGAIN ALWAYS TRY NEW WAYS
AND WITH THE TOURCHWOOD IS A WHOLE NEW WAY OF UNKNOWN!

  7. I wonder why suddely such a buzz around that story, it’s just an idea which never really came out, even though John Barrowman singing "I know him so well" was a must to listen . But I must say a musical about a science -fiction story could be an inventive combination or a TV Movie special with DR Who singing

  8. There’s something a bit odd about this story. In the original article it comes across almost as a joke. I’d be interested to see what the book actually says.

@ Marco: this story is revealed in the book The Writer’s Tale, which is released next week. That’s why this sudden buzz.

  9. I agree with Ian. If anyone were to write a Torchwood musical, you’d expect it to be Murray Gold, not B&B. Perhaps he was busy?

That’s not to say that it wouldn’t have worked. For instance, listen to the flashback during CHESS pa svenska’s "Ungern ’56" — it has a similar air to some of Murray Gold’s Doctor Who music (e.g., "The Greatest Story Never Told", "Song of Freedom", etc).

I also have a hard time believing that B&B are fans of Torchwood, though as a Doctor Who fan myself, I’d love to be wrong about that.

  10. Whoever said Torchwood was kids tv has never seen the show. Torchwood is SUPERB -very adult. Not sure about B&B doing it though – think the humour is too British for them.
