Christopher Wollter and Philip Jalmelid from the Gothenburg Opera production of CHESS på Svenska performed Vem ser ett barn (Pity The Child) and I mitt hjärtas land (Anthem) respectively on the Swedish TV show Lotta på Liseborg on Monday.
The pair went on to sing other songs too, some from musicals and the memorable Swedish Eurovision Song Contest entry from 1986 E’ de’ det här du kallar kärlek?
The Gothenburg production of CHESS is billed as “an updated version of the national treasure CHESS”. Director Mira Bartov is putting another spin on CHESS. And this time CHESS på Svenska no less.
There appears to be no direct involvement from Benny and Björn in the new CHESS på Svenska, in stark contrast to Lars Rudolfsson’s 2002 production at Stockholm’s Cirkus, which they helped produce.
The show will be presented at Göteborgs Operan (where Kristina från Duvemåla was performed back in 1996). The music will be conducted by Anders Eljas who orchestrated and conducted (thanks Niclas!) the original music for CHESS and directed the London Symphony Orchestra both for the album recording and during the 1984 European tour. He also co-arranged the original recording along with Benny.
Using the graphic style of the comic world, the production team claim to have “created an updated version” of the Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice musical, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in a couple of years.
In December 2010 in an exclusive interview with icethesite, Benny hinted that there may be a remastered album coming along to celebrate the 30 year milestone, with bonus tracks and a DVD with videos and TV appearances.
The all new take on the Swedish production of CHESS will open on 08 September 2012 and run until 31 December 2012 (not every day will have a performance though). Tickets are on sale now.
