  CAN'T WAIT!! Last night was the cast recording! Tomorrow is the first performance! I'm going to both nights. Just re-read all 4 Emigrants novels, re-watched the films of The Emigrants and The Good Land and have been listening to nothing else but Kristina fran Duvemala for the past month. Wow, as I write this I'm starting to wonder if this is becoming an unhealthy obsession. Oh well. My great grandparents came from Smaland and Skelleftea to Duluth, Minnesota and my mom was given The Emigrants novels by our cousins who were descended from the brother who stayed behind when my ancestors emigrated. We appreciate the novels as the story of how we became Americans. As an AEA actor living in NY and raised in MN- this show is very personal and something I DESPERATELY want to be in WHEN it comes to Broadway!!

  Attending both nights, although I'm buying tomorrow's ticket when I pick up tonight's. For those last minuters who don't mind the cheap seats, don't forget the code KRIS8550. I don't know what's left, but it brings the price of dress circle tickets down to $50 and center balcony down to $40.

  Got autographs outside of Carnegie Hall last night before the cast went in to record. Didn't get to see Helen Sjoholm, but Russell Watson, Kevin Odekirk, Louise Pitre and Benny Andersson were very nice to take the time to sign my copy of The Last Letter Home (last book of The Emigrants). I also caught Peter Joback (the original Robert) as he was walking by and got him to sign!

  Sensational! Helen in clear English as if it were her native language, 'Robert' getting the second largest applause for his rendition of 'Gold can turn to sand' (the standing ovation went to Helen's "You have to be there"). Björn and Benny appeared on stage and can be really, really proud. Will the USA like a musical without a happy ending, apart from a blossoming apple tree? I do hope so...

  Truly an amazing experience, it was wonderful to hear the music performed live. "You Have to be There" was incredible and deserved the standing ovation it got. The rest of the show was excellent as well. The only issues I had were some changes to the meaning of the songs ("Stanna/In the Dead of Darkness" for one) and the fact that some of the time it was difficult to understand the lyrics (though these are mostly points in the score that it are difficult to make out the Swedish words on the CD as well). Nonetheless, a memorable night that leaves me waiting for a chance to see the full production on Broadway (or London I guess...)

  A wonderful evening! What a relief that the translation works so well. Some things work even better than the Swedish version, eg. Miracle of God/Herrans Underverk which was utterly delightful. Pitre was a great Ulrika and her Never/Aldrig was like a whole Act in itself - another very good lyric. Odekirk was charming, meeting with fans earlier in the day, and gave some of the best performances of the night. The perfect Robert. Particularly liked his Down to the Sea/Ut Mot Et Hav. Helen got better and better until she gave the most gripping performance I've ever heard, in any language, of You Have to be There. Standing ovation then and there. Electrifying! She is a a truly great singer and musician.
  Understanding the words became easier after intermission when they had all evidently been told (no doubt by Benny) to stay closer to the mikes. Still, some tempos were too fast to hear the words (Lice, We Open Up the Gateways and Sunday in Battery Park, which had a disappointing cut). I don't think this will be a problem for the recording though. With balance sorted we are in for an excellent CD of almost the complete Kristina in English (only a few cuts from the original CDs, and even some additions).
  Paul Gemignani has a tendency to rush through a little and doesn't give enough power or space to the big emotional moments, but it is difficult for an orchestra of this size to make sufficient impact in this hall. I want to hear it recorded some day with the LSO, as Chess was. This score is even more deserving of such an orchestra.
  Other highlights - American Man/Tank Att Man got one of the best reactions. Lice was fun too. "Summer Rose" sounds nicer than "Astrakan". Rising from Myth and Legend/Var hor Vi Hemma about the founding of USA could become a great American anthem for choirs across the country -it's that good! The narration links and projections of text worked extremely well. My favourite number from the show, Stanna, gets a fairly radical re-working of the lyrics and is now 'In the Dead of Darkness' with a slight change in the melody line almost at the end which I am not convinced about. Can't wait to hear this again tomorrow. Watson has a wonderful voice but maybe he has a better version of this one in him.. Again, the fact that he projects the words less well than his co-stars, who are all more experienced in music theatre, should not prevent him sounding great on the recording.
  So many good things, too much to write. Others will add...

  Thanks to everyone who has found time to write in so far with reviews and links etc.
  
  I had an amazing night last night and I'm sure tonight will be no different in terms of the impact that Kristina as full pelt can have.
  
  My thoughts, this hot and humid New York morning:
  
  Helen was a true LEADING lady and offered a sure-footed, mesmerising and inspiring English turn as Kristina. 'You Have To Be There' was an incredible tour de force!
  
  Kevin Odekirk reflected perfect and inspired casting and he delivered an immaculate, confident and sensitive performance (despite the off-putting gun-shot sound that ricocheted around Carnegie Hall as something metallic fell to ground on stage during one of his solos!).
  
  Louise Pitre's portrayal of Ulrika came with gusto and panache - her clear, perfectly weighted narration also helped draw in the audience until we were all practically on stage!
  
  Russell Watson was a strong, commanding Karl Oskar and he made light work of songs that often fell between his 'classical' and 'pop' voices. I think tonight he may prove even more confident.
  
  For all the members of the orchestra and all the members of the choir, the sound of Kristina at Carnegie Hall was far more reminiscent of that experienced in a theatre than that found on a recording.
  
  Perhaps in a nod towards the fact that a symphonic type, Chess-like recording full of layered sonic effects can reflect badly on the paired down orchestras in theatre pits, the orchestra and choir of Kristina were weighted towards a more even and consistent delivery.
  
  They sounded warm and rich from where I was sitting and the subtleties were intriguing and immensely listenable.
  
  So, am I biased? Of course! But those are my immediate thoughts laid bare.

  What an amazing and thrilling evening. It all went by in a blur so I am hoping to remember a little more after tonight's performance :).
  
  I have never been a fan of Russell Watson but thought he did a fantastic job, but it was the other 3 leads that really blew me away. All three had real stand out moments for their 'showcase' songs. More than once I had tears in my eyes.
  
  No one else has mentioned it, but my only criticism is that, once again, (like Chess at RAH) it was hard to make out the lyrics especially in the first half, when there was more than a soloist performing. It did improve in the second half but it was the only negative thing I heard others talking about in the interval and after the show. If only they had sur-titles on the screen behind the performers.
  
  Finally, I hope the RW diehard fans managed to see RW at the stage door. He hadn't materialised by midnight.
  
  Thanks to the blonde guy with the Abba necklace for the flyer - we didn't see any in the foyer.
  
  Finally, finally (!), several times I heard people ask if "Ice" was here and what he looks like. LOL

  Overall, I had a wonderful time last night. It was incredible to hear the music live and Helen was beyond compare. The place went absolutely crazy after "You Have To Be There." Absolutely rapturous.
  
  That said, do I think it could succeed on Broadway? I'm not so sure. Aside from a couple attempts at humor, this is a VERY serious show that I'm not sure will have mass appeal. Those of us who've listened to the Swedish CDs for a decade can appreciate its beauty, but I'm not sure New York audiences looking for fun and fluff will take it to heart. Perhaps a limited engagement would be best.
  
  My only real criticism is that I thought "Lice" was absolutely awful..completely jarring against the rest of it and just not funny. The humor in "American Man" was FAR more effective.
  
  I should also say that several people did leave at intermission, but given it was an audience made up of Kristina diehards, Swedes, ABBA fans and undoubtedly more than a few thinking they were getting another "Mamma Mia," it's somewhat understandable.
  
  As for me, I was just grateful to be there and in "I Will Be There," I think I found the song I want played at my wake or funeral...and I'm agnostic. That song was one of the true highlights for me.
  
  On an icethesite note, I met a few fellow readers...one from Indiana who, as it turns out, is staying at the same hotel as me, and another who attended, like me, the 1979 Radio City Music Hall concert. Was a whole lot of fun bonding on all things ABBA and Kristina.

  I was fully prepared to be roundly disappointed, but I wasn't. I would be hard pressed to find a single lyric I hated, and the overall context was stunning in its beauty.
  
  The audience was heavily tilted to a 'home' audience, meaning it seemed most everyone in the audience had more than a passing knowledge of the show, not just us fan club members in the first three rows. One could tell because Helen Sjöholm got a huge round of applause as she took the stage to sing the first song.
  
  Helen was amazing. I had forgotten how she brought so much emotion to the character of Kristina: her fears, her yearning, and her devotion. She was well prepared, hardly looking down at her lyrics sheet at all, which means she managed to get these English lyrics to be ingrained as easily as the Swedish. She received a standing ovation for You Have To Be There.
  
  Russell Watson's voice is well-known, and it was very well suited to playing Karl-Oskar, which is not an easy part to sing -- it needs a very powerful tenor, think Pity the Child. Still, he managed to imbue the part with excellent subtlety from time to time. His singing was fantastic and his tears as Kristina dies put a lump in my throat. My only issues with his performance was that he pronounce "year" as "y'ahr" and had a distracting habit of slowly moving his right hand as if he were conducting.
  
  Louise Pitre, who nailed the earthiness of Donna Sheridan in the Toronto and Broadway versions of Mamma Mia, played Ulrika, the former town whore known derisively as The Happy One. This character's big number (Never!) is the first showstopping moment in the show, and Louise was amazing. The melody is one of the hardest Benny has ever inflicted on a singer, very chromatic at the same time it needs to be gut-wrenchingly bitter -- not easy to sing.
  
  But the star making performance of the evening went to Kevin Odekirk playing Robert, K-O's younger dreaming brother. From his first number (Down to the Sea) to my first tears of the night with Gold Can Turn to Sand, he was a joy to see perform as he so clearly loves the character and its music.

  More thoughts:
  
  The final lyrics to In the Dead of Darkness (Stanna) were my first 'wow' moment, something to the effect: Bring her to the light [strong], help her to the light [pleading], help her through the night [almost whispered]. I got chills.
  
  Sunday in Battery Park was the only song that did not seem to work, but mostly because it had been cut almost in half. One of the things that makes the song work is that you have two opportunities to hear the chorus ("How d'you do, how are you...") in 6/8 time twice before the Swedes start their counterpoint in 3/4 time for the last chorus. In this version there was no second verse to better establish what's happening musically. [It also needs the people floating on balconies with parasols]
  
  American Man was amazing at how well it worked. The inability to understand was not the focus of the song, but rather what was going on in the heads of Pastor Jackson and the girls separately -- the girls finding this new thing known as an American Man to be the most wonderful reason to have made the trip; Pastor Jackson, a somewhat elderly man, a bit taken aback as it appears there are four women flirting with him! They use the song to show that PJ and Ulrika are smitten, which allows them to cut the Will You Marry Me song that came later in the Swedish version.
  
  The references to the Native Americans (Indians) were only made in Queen of the Prairie/Wild Grass. The Red Iron bit was changed to having the chorus sing lyrics like "Do You see your creatures" as a counterpoint to Kristina's pain.

  This was one of the most magical nights of my life!
  
  I managed to speak to both Bjorn and Benny. Bjorn signed the booklet from my copy of 'The Album-Deluxe Edition.' He smiled and said "You know, it's not gonna be like this (pointed to the booklet) tonight!" I said "I know-I can't wait!" Benny was very polite in declining to sign the booklet due to time during intermission. "I'm sorry. If I start to sign, I can't stop," he said to me. "Maybe after?" I was grateful that they were both so kind to me. Surely autograph seekers are tiring to them. But it was the first (and I am sure only) time in my life when I will see them.
  
  The music was incredible. I was moved to tears. This is the work of their lives. As someone who had only heard selected pieces of the music, it was a revelation to hear it like this. Truly breathtaking. I was moved to tears at the end. (Which has never happened to me before).
  
  Steller performances by everyone involved. Brilliant. The audience's heartfelt reaction to the performance was strong.
  
  Let's hope that America is smart, and that we take to Kristina when it reaches Broadway. We should. It is an experience unlike anything out there right now.

  Yes, you will hear of some people who didn't but even if you concede the audience was "Kristina-Friendly" it was so because the piece is such a sensation.
  
  I spoke to several people who cut their teeth on Broadway and who are not only walking encyclopedias but who are libraries of theatrical knowledge and to the man or woman "Kristina" was discussed in the most ovationary terms.
  
  A few of the more memorable non-performance moments: the appearance on stage of the creative team during the curtain call; Russell
  accepting a bouquet from a first-row admirer, and a woman and man (?)
  waving a Swedish flag from a box near the stage on the left.
  
  Most of all, however, sensing the unfettered joy Benny and Bjorn must have felt in bringing "Kristina" at last to New York and to see it so lovingly embraced.
  
  On behalf of Americans who have not said it, "Thank you, Sweden. For the courage of your pilgrims whose stories of sacrifice and bravery inspired Vilhelm Molberg. Thank you for inspiring Benny and Bjorn to

  As veteran theater goers, my wife and I both set a record for the most goose bumps in one show. The cast was spectacular, "Gold Into Sand" is one of the greatest numbers I've heard on stage in a long time, and Helen's "You Have to Be There," epitomizes to its fullest the term showstopper. One of the most unfogettable moments I've experienced in the theater. It was pure magic and truly an international event, with people from all over the world in attendance, from Sweden, Singapore, Australia, and Beijing, just to name a few places. It was great watching some people waving the Swedish flag from the side boxes. My hands literally hurt from the ovations at the end. I guess you can tell by now that we loved it.   I am a huge fan of Chess (when the the original production be presented in NY intead of the watered-down version stage so long ago) and now I have new music to hum an characters to remember. I was sitting five rows behing Benny on the aisle in Row R and the sound was a little off on the vocals but the orchestra and orchestrations were moving and memorable.   New. Exciting. Is it ready for America? YES! Kristina was an amazing experience for me last night. I had the pleasure of attending the performance on Wednesday evening with my family and was just in awe the whole night. My father had given me the Swedish CD set many years ago, and I listened a little bit, but due to the language barrier, it didn't hold my attention too long. Then, when my father informed me of this concert performance MONTHS AGO and said "Hilary, be sure you have the 23rd free, because we're going to see Kristina!" I said, "sure, I'll go", not having a clue as to what I'd be in for at Carnegie Hall.
  
  From the opening notes of the orchestra to the very end, I was awestruck. And it hadn't hit me until this evening when I wanted to search for everything and anything I could with regard to this magnificent show: the lyrics, pictures of the performance, etc... I'm trying to learn the words of "You Have To Be There" just in case they audition for Kristina when it (hopefully) comes to Broadway. I know it might take a little time.
  
  Anyway, for those of you who saw it either last night or tonight, you know how magical it was... I cannot wait to hear of its growing success in America and will be one of the first ticket purchasers when it hits a Broadway theatre.
  
  Congratulations to Mr. Anderson, Mr. Ulvaeus, Ms.Sjöholm, Mr. Watson, Ms. Pitre, Mr. Odekirk, the company, orchestra, crew, et al. These performances will go down in history.

  Second time around was again electrifying. "You have to be there" suffered from a guitar intro that was a bit louder than before, and from some enormous idiot that forgot to switch of his / her phone, but in spite of all that Helen's voice was sending shivers down my spine. Hopefully Meryl Streep's presence, sitting next to Benny, will stimulate the attention of a wider audience for a broadway production of this modern 'Three pennies opera'.

  I witnessed the first performance from the front row and wow I cannot tell you how much Kristina moved me - emotionally ! A truly wonderful performance by all concerned especially You Have to Be There by Helen which received a standing ovation! Congrats also to Kevin and Gold Can Turn to Sand truly inspirational! Russell and Louise also deserve a mention for their truly great performances. Sorry this is short right now bur i still have not come down to earth yet!

  I heard the phone last night too and it annoyed me beyond words. That said, "You Have to Be There" was even more forceful and defiant than Wednesday.
  
  I could see where Benny was sitting from the balcony when I stood up but had no idea that Meryl was there...how cool.
  
  Can't wait for the CD...and that song I've attached myself to is "I'll Be Waiting There"...I had the wrong title in my initial "review." It has a special place in my heart already and last night it did bring me to tears.

  Stephen in UK, the song on the Swedish 3-CD set which is "You Have to Be There" in English, is "Du maste finnas" - which means "You have to exist", so not a bad translation. I'm glad to know that there are others like me who have had the Swedish CDs for years - and wondered when the rest of the world was going to discover this music!

  Simply outstanding. Both concerts were just brilliant. The English translation really works. Having seen it in Swedish and heard the CDs so many times I was curious as to how it would work, and I have to say that it's been done perfectly. Some cuts to the score but they aren't noticable. Interesting that the bits that were originally in English had some revisions. Some moments brought tears to the eyes, and you could hear it all around the hall. I hope that we will eventually see a full English production and I'm looking forward to the CD of the concerts.

  A group of five of us were in the Thursday night audience, all of us musicians by avocation or profession. I agree with all the kudos above, but want to express gratitude to the writers and producers for the lavish orchestra - perhaps 70 players? Their work was stunning. The chorus was full of gifted singers as well, and three talented children.
  
  So often we find a bare minimum of players for a show. This score, so beautifully orchestrated, deserved real, live, top of the line instrumentalists.
  
  My only regret was that there were times when we simply could not understand the words when it was full cast and orchestra. It wasn't that the orchestra was too loud (I know one of the players who said they were actually holding back) but that there was so much sound coming at once, one could simply not process it all in the moment.
  
  A powerful story, stunningly told. Bravo.

  Just back from NY and slightly jet-lagged but had to add my comments on the fantastic night (Thursday) at Kristina.
  For me it was worth the price of the ticket just to be in the presence of Helen Sjoholm singing You Have to Be There. I go to a lot of theatre and I've been to many 'gala' concerts over the years and this was an all-time highlight.
  Overall the concert was fantastic and all the cast performed superbly. Helen of course but also Russell and particularly Louise Pitre. However, much though I loved the music I cannot see this being a huge theatrical hit on either side of the Atlantic. To be honest I think the story is a bit worthy and while I can understand the appeal in Sweden I can't really see the mass audience in Britain or the States 'getting' it. Let's not forget that the audience at these concerts were die-hard B&B fans including more than a sprinkling of Swedes.
  Had a fabulous seat in one of the first tier boxes v near the stage and from there I had a clear view of Benny with his guests namely Meryl Streep AND her Mamma Mia co-star Christine Baranski. It was touching to see Meryl Streep being moved to tears after You Have To Be There and also seeing her snapping away with her camera as the cast, B & B took their bows at the end. Also saw Gorel Hanser taking good care of everyone.
  All in all an unforgettable experience and well worth the trip.

  I also wants to give an advise. Everybody should realise that the event in New York was a concert of a score of a musical. The original production lasted almost 4 hours. I've been lucky to have seen that production and I thought it was stunning. It is a moving story with real characters, a very interesting theme and it was brilliantly directed and it had some stunning sets.
  That said I think is wise to judge the event in New York as a concert, not as a theatreplay! Believe me, with real actors, sets etc Kristina will be a stunning and moving night in the theatre. I know, I have seen it.

  I, too, was at the Carnegie Hall concert on Wednesday, and it was a night I will never forget! To be surrounded by such greatness - Benny and Bjorn, the wonderful singers and large symphonic orchestra - while sitting in a box seat at beautiful Carnegie Hall -- it was almost too much for me to take in, and I will treasure the memory forever.
  
  Early on in the evening, I spotted where Benny and Bjorn were seated. It was fun to periodically glance their way to see them taking such delight in the entire evening. At the end of the concert, I went down to where they had been seated, and I watched from a respectful distance as Benny was being greeted by friends and admirers. I made a conscious decision (which I am already regretting) to not be one more admiring fan clamoring for his time and attention, although he was very gracious to all the autograph seekers, picture takers, and folks wanting to say a few words to him. I did, however, spend a minute or so sitting in the actual seat where Benny had been sitting for the concert -- and I even took a picture of it! Benny's music has brought me such great joy, and I also admire the low-key humility with which he and Bjorn conduct themselves (unlike many current celebrities). As an American of Scandinavian descent, I am doubly-proud. And I do hope to greet Benny and Bjorn in person someday -- maybe at the Broadway premiere of Kristina? One can only hope!

  I was at Thursday's performance and am still overwhelmed. Not just by the beautiful music and performances, but because I was sitting directly behind Benny in the audience! What a treasure to see him respond to the music he composed. He got frustrated at the end when the audience applauded between "Rising From The Myth And Legend" and "I'll Be Waiting There," strongly shaking his head 'no' to indicate there shouldn't be applause there. Other than that, though, he appeared very pleased with the performances.
  
  Meryl Streep was seated to his right and Christine Baranski on his left. Meryl was visibly moved by the music, pulling out tissues after "You Have To Be There" and sharing them with Baranski. She also seemed quite chummy with Benny, leaning over to whisper in his ear several times during the show. If they were to do a movie version I think Meryl would make a perfect Ulrika.
  
  Like pamusic above, I decided not to bother Benny though now part of me wishes I had. But what would I have said? "Thank you for your music" is what I wanted to say but I wouldn't want him to think I was making a joke!
  
  Of course, the music was just absolutely gorgeous. What a pleasure to be able to hear Helen perform it live! And I'm a big Peter Joback fan but I think Kevin Odekirk may have been an even better Robert. I knew of Russell Watson but had never really heard him sing. Gorgeous voice and he really moved me with his performance. He was truly crying at the end when Kristina dies. And Louise Pitre was a revelation too! I confess I never really cared for her voice as Donna in "Mamma Mia!" but Ulrika could have been written for her. Kudos also to the outstanding orchestra and chorale. I can't wait for the CD!

  I attended "Kristina" on both nights, sitting second row, center on Wednesday and front row, left side on Thursday. It proved to be a surreal and fantastic experience!
  While waiting in the lobby for the doors to open at 7:30 p.m., a very nice usher saw that I was wearing heavy leg braces and using a cane. He told me to follow him up into the elevator where we got off at the parquet level. He walked me to the entrance doors where I could hear the rehearsal finishing up and left me all alone. It was 6:45, I thought 'what am I going to do here alone in the hallway for 45 minutes?" Suddenly the music stopped and Bjorn walks out of the auditorium!!
  He sees I'm all alone and says he didn't know anyone would be there until the doors opened at 7:30. I explain about my handicap and Bjorn immediately relaxes and starts talking to me. I showed him the large tattoo on my arm of him and Benny and he couldn't stop laughing - he loved it! I had him sign a few things I had brought and we visited for some time. He told me to have a great time and went back inside. By that time I had gained some confidence so I followed him inside, thinking where there's Bjorn, Benny can't be far behind. As I headed to my second row seat, out walks Benny right in front of me! No one else in the whole auditorium but me, Benny and Bjorn -- UNBELIEVABLE!! He sees my leg braces and walks over to me saying he's aware of how very difficult it must have been to travel by myself to see the show and thanks me profusely for coming. We then proceed to chat for several minutes and he signs a number of items for me as well. He is delighted to see my arm tattoo and repeats "Will you look at that?" After telling me to have a good time, he leaves the auditorium; Bjorn had also left by then. Within a short time, people start filing into their seats. I settle into my seat and begin to get lost in the first act, the majestic music adds to the happiness and awe of what had just happened to me. Intermission soon comes and I notice Benny a few rows behind me with a crowd of fans around him. I make my way to him and have a nice man take my picture standing next to Benny. I hand Benny a small Swedish flag "for luck". As I leave for my seat, I turn to look back at him and he waves the small flag at me! What a great night!
  The following evening, I return at the same time to the lobby, this time with my daughter. The
  same usher is there and insists I come back again with him to get settled early. My daughter and I walk to our front row seats just as Benny comes off the stage. I stop him and ask if he'd sign a few more items I had. He was busy doing last minute things and said "I'll be back to you" before he walks to the back of the auditorium to check sound levels. I see it's around 7:10 and I'm thinking he's much too busy to come back. Suddenly I see him turn around and walk back to me. We lean on the stage and proceed to have a nice chat. I ask if he remembers me and he points to my tattoo and says "Yes, I DO remember you!" I tell him he should consider recording a CD with just him and his piano. Benny suddenly gets very excited and says he's been thinking of doing just that, playing music from "Kristina". I ask if he'd let my daughter take a picture of us and he readily agrees. The photo is beautiful and has become a reminder of the nice visit he and I had. I end our visit by congratulating him on that morning's news that ABBA had been nominated for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I told him I'll see him at the ceremony in March and he says "Okay" as he goes backstage. WOW!!
  After a second fantastic concert, I stand up and lean on the stage. I see two women come up beside me with their cameras and start taking photos of Benny as he comes up for the encore. He sees the women and begins to act up and does silly poses. I turn and see that it's Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski!
  We head towards the ASI reception and don't wait too long before Bjorn comes in. He sees me and asks what more do I have for him to sign and I give him yet more items I had brought. By this time he's laughing hard as he signs yet more things and is delighted to allow my daughter to take a picture of us, it too turns out very well! The night continues to get better when six or seven cast members come up to me and ask if I'm the one with the tattoo. They said they had heard from Benny and Bjorn about it and they wanted to take pictures of my arm! Too funny! Joy Hermalyn, who played Fina-Kajsa,insisted I go and show the tattoo to Helen Sjoholm who seemed amazed about how realistic the tattoo was. Next were Goral Hanser and director Lars Rudolfsson, who both said they had heard about my tattoo. They all laughed as they signed the program for me.
  As the reception winded down, I started to realize what a dream come true the past two evenings had been. Enough memories had happened to me to last a lifetime. Benny and Bjorn had signed so many items for me and each had privately spent time visiting with me -- not once, but twice! To top that off, I was lucky enough to see Benny and Bjorn's musical masterpiece both nights! How lucky can one person be????

  I was in the Minneapolis performances of Kristina in Swedish in 1996. I remember being awed by the soloist and especially Helen and Peter. I now live in New Jersey and was able to go to the first performance of the English version. It was really good. I was thrilled to be there. It didn't move me as much as the original (I also saw the fully-staged version in Stockholm in 1999) but it was moving nevertheless. Helen's song brought down the house. The guy who played ROBERT had enormous shoes to fill after Peter Joback! Russell Watson was quite good as Karl Oskar. Louise was also good as Ulrika. Chorus was fine but I am partial to when I did the chorus in Minneapolis! Once this is fully staged in English it will be a smash hit.

  My first opportunity to get online since the Thursday show (I left NYC at 5am Friday morning and have been travelling ever since) - I won't repeat, but can only reiterate, the glowing and rapturous reports from the other people that were there - it truly was a wonder to behold and a real privelege to have experienced it first hand. Just a couple of things to add, I don't think enough has been said about how wonderful Louise Pitre was, she totally embraced the piece, making it seem as though she has been a part of it from the start, she brought a strength and a depth to the role of Ulkrika and her voice really suited the narration that she did. Also impressed by Russell Watson, again he seemed to totally embrace the piece as a whole and his role, he was genuinely crying at the end. Hope to see him continue his involvement in the piece. Interesting to see the reviews that people have been posting links to - the significant one I suppose in the NY Times, which single handedly crucified Chess - so, whilst not excatly a glowing review it did see some future for the show.   It seems like nobody has complaints about the leading singers, and certainly everyone praises Russell Watson, Kevin Odekirk, Louise Pitre, and especially Helen Sjöholm.

(a shame all the telephones ringing though.... ) Helen sounds better than ever - she is fantastic in every way I understand they couldn´t find anyone else to "do it"! I have seen the original show many times and I am sure many of the negative critics would have a different opinion seeing the musical. I think Kristina might be ahead of it´s time like Mozart was during his time. Björn and Benny have said long ago they will not turn this musical into a "donald duck" musical - classy guys who have always done what they believe in not going with the flow and always succeeding in the end!

  What a concerts, the cast was wonderful and yes must agree the last night it was even better.
  Helen was awsome, it was so breathtaking and the moment that Kristina passed away I coudn't hide my tears anymore. Also some woman of the choir had tears in the eyes.

  I attended the second performance of Kristina and was completely blown away! The singing was phenomenal and the music majestic. I could not believe how lucky I was to be in the presence of such wonderful performers and have the composers only rows away.   I saw the Wednesday concert and my own experiences of it and reactions to it were similar to everyone else's on this site - it was an extremely moving evening and my friend and I were both very happy we had made the journey to see it.
  
  So on a practical note... I think someone asked for a list of which pieces of the original Swedish score were included and what they are called in English to help those who didn't make it to New York understand the discussions and reviews better. I hope the following list is helpful.

  I'm hoping someone posts the lyrics of "i'll Be Waiting There" at some point....the song really moved me as well. It's on You Tube, as is a healthy chunk of the show, but I can't make everything out.
  
  If the true test of the musical is that you go out humming the music, this succeeded in spades. It completely reignited my interest in the show and I've been listening to the Swedish CDs almost non-stop since.
  
  I do hope a Broadway or touring production is eventually mounted, although I do have doubts about its prospects for commercial success. I love it, a lot of us love it, but whether New York audiences in general take it to heart is a whole 'nother thing.

  filming going on and there a few websites (mostly from abroad) who seem to have been given one or two very high quality, high definition clips that
  could have only been taken by pros.
  
  I've seen one of Helen doing "You must be there" and another of "Gold to Sand".
  
  I don't think it's for release, however, since there was no audience, and without an audience all you have is rehearsal.

  Just back from NY today. Was desperate to read what everyone thought. I had a great seat up in the first tier balcony, above Benny et al, and 20 along from Bjorn - a bonus!
  I can only match what everyone says above. Same criticism re not being able to make out the words at times. I also thought Russell was a bit &quot;barkey&quot; at times. But then I'm not a huge fan.
  
  I thought the other male singers were streets ahead. Biggest disappointment was the cut on Battery Park. I also was desperate to meet up with other fans but that was one thing that did not happen.(Tho' hi to the guys my friend ambushed at the diner the next morning. (I embarrassed myself twice shouting Ice's real name to folk I thought he was - we'd met at Mamma Mia Sweden premiere.)
  
  Am so glad I went as I also do not see it reaching the stage in a full blown musical format. More's the pity, and here's hoping I'm wrong. I've got a snippet of You have to be there on my mobile so when I figure out how to post it I will! Have also got a spare &quot;programme&quot; if anyone wants it.

  I was at both concerts with a group of friends from Russell Watson's forum. We were all stunned by the performances. The music was beautiful, the singers amazing and I could hear every word in the 5th row (except the choir!).
  
  Baring in mind that the only musical theatre that Russell has ever done was 'War of the Worlds', where he played Parson Nathaniel, I though he did a stirling job. I agree that he sang in a different way to those experienced in musicals, but that's his style. And yes, he does have a habit of conducting himself (something to do with pacing and breathing I think)which I've learnt to ignore. Give the man a break, real tears at the end of both nights! He had me in tears too!
  
  I was lucky enough to speak to him after the show on Wednesday (gone midnight when he came out) and he said the tears didn't bother him, but the running nose did! We did offer him some tissues!
  
  I thought that his duets with Helen were excellent, they complimented each other beautifully and I hope they can record something together in the future.
  
  For those of you who have never seen him live and heard the 'big' voice, there were a couple of glimpses. He has in the past filled Carnegie Hall on his own.
  
  I'm so glad I went, I can't wait for the CD. And thanks to whoever had the nerve to record bits and put them on YouTube, you're a saint!!!!

  I was privileged to be there the first night, and it was absolutely amazing! I had tears running down my face that started during You Have To Be There and could not stop them the rest of the show!
  
  I have not known of Benny & Bjorn's music for long. I am a huge fan of Josh Groban and discovered Chess when Josh performed it in NYC 6 years ago and then again last year in London. I also realized what a brilliant piece Chess is, whoever sings it. When I heard that they had done another musical and that it was coming to NYC, I just had to see what their second effort would be like, trusting it would be as brilliant as Chess, and they absolutely came through!
  
  As everyone has said, all the principle singers were fabulous! I'd never heard Helen before except on YouTube but she was absolutely fantastic! I have one of Russell Watson's albums and love his voice, and he was magnificent too! Kevin was a delightful surprise, and Louise was absolutely perfect in her role. Some of the chorus members who stepped out to play various roles were delightful as well!
  
  Looking forward to buying the recording when it's released! Bravo, Benny and Bjorn and all the musicians!

  It's more than a week ago that I attended the wonderful concert, still am on the moon.
  And more and more I start to realise that this concert was really special.
  Who knows if it ever ends as musical on broadway or that they do another concert again. Benny seems to be happy with this but you know this guy wants to do more. I'm glad that they will make a cd of it and thank god for the fans with guts to film it for the ones who weren't there.
  Atleast they get an idea how it was.
  Kevin Odekirk was for me also a surprise, he can be a new star for broadway. We had a meeting with him and he is gifted with his voice but he is also very cute. After he sang Gold can turn to sand, you could he was so reliefed that it turned out so well. tumbs up for this guy. Russell was great too but Kevin stole many heart after that meeting. Louise was wonderful, a real mean and angry woman, she spitted out her anger to the man who used her and in daytime despites her. Her eyes burned when she sang Never.
  I will never forget the look on her face.
  And Helen oh well she is Kristina, it's in her blood. Kerry sings wonderful but the way Helen sings it there are no words for it.
  You simply had to be there to be withness of the concert of the year. Wished you could have all been there to see it.

  Some may know this but I just came across a blurb that said the Mamma Mia! Dvd was the biggest selling producti in the history of Amazon U.K.--a list that included the Beattles Box set, all the Harry Potter offerings, as well as the record setting "The Dark Knight.
  
  I mention this as circumstantial evidence that the number of fans of ABBA and/or B & B are so much larger than many people could imagine.
  
  I would think the number is so astronomical that a musical version of "Kristina" would probably do very well anywhere it was launched.
  
  By far, most of the people who come to visit New York City come for theater. Surprisingly about 50% of tourists coming to New York are from the U.K.--where Mamma Mia! has been running for 11 years and shattered records. Why would anyone doubt "Kristina" might struggle to find an audience?
  
  I suppose we'll see in a few months but I'm guessing that when the "Kristina at Carnegie" cd-set is released it shoots straight to the top of the charts the way "Jesus Christ Superstar" did, bearing further testimony to the incredible fan base B & B still have.

  I arrived in NYC the night of the first performance, at about the same time it was ending. As my taxi drove through the streets to the appartment I'd booked, I wondered how the crowd were receiving it, the curtain call with B&B, etc. I was so curious and envious at the same time.
  
  Next day, I went to Bloomingdales to get me some nice new rags for the concert. (I love it how good clothes are so much cheaper in America!). Henceforth, I'll always consider them my "Kristina Concert" attire. (Thankyou Hugo, you're Boss!)
  
  Then the moment came. I sat third row from the stage. The orchestra struck up the prologue. My goodness! The acoustics were terrific! The orchestra and arrangements were unbelievably faithful to the one heard on cd. I was amazed and thrilled already!
  
  And then Helen appeared and began singing. It was sheer heaven. Her voice was like honey. Not a false note, not a waver. Perfect. Faultless. I couldn't believe my ears. I was hearing her voice live and she sang so beautifully, so smoothly.
  
  The whole concert was superb. I think the translation was extremely faithful to the original Swedish. They managed to preserve every nuance of meaning and feeling that existed in the original Swedish version.
  
  I could see clearly the faces of the choir members just in front of me, as well as those of the principal performers.
  
  By the time "You Must Be There" started, I'd already gone through quite a few tissues. Helen's rendition of this showstopper was remarkable. Her penultimate cries of "You must!" had her shaking, angry, the tendons flexing on her neck, her voice gruff and almost breaking: "you MUST!!!".
  
  The highlight for me was the final song, "I'll Be Waiting There", with Helen cradled against Russell's chest... and Russell Watson's left eye filled with tears, glinting and shimmering as the lights caught him crying.
  
  I glanced quickly at members of the choir during this, the last song, and lo and behold! one of their number - a big, tough black guy - was also crying! It's good to know that I wasn't the only one.
  
  By the time the curtain call came, everyone was on their feet. Thunderous applause. Whoops and yells added to the din as B&B made their appearance.
  
  It was a fantastic evening, one I'll never forget. It was a Thursday night, too. The last time I felt as elated as this was at another concert in Perth a long, long time ago - on the 10th of March, 1977, to be exact. That night was also a Thursday night. And that concert was of course ABBA's.
  
  I'm so grateful to have had the chance to applaud Benny and Bjorn again - in the flesh - so many years after I first saw them playing live in front of me with ABBA.
  
  I'm still in New York now (it's my favourite city), and while I'm enjoying it as much as I always have, there's a small part of me wishing I'd timed it so the Kristina concert ended my three week stay.
  
  It's started getting cold today, too. Still, there's no better place to be than the Big Apple in my view.
  
  I'm so glad the stars aligned to have me come here AND get to see Kristina/B&B at the same time. It's like a hole-in-one!
  
  I now have two equal-top concert highlights: ABBA in concert and "Kristina" in concert.

  I think the difference between ABBA's fan base, "Mamma Mia" and the potential success of any future "Kristina" production is that "Kristina" is so different from anything they've done. I do think it would do well in Europe and Australia, but America and fickle Broadway audiences are another matter.
  
  We all know here how beautiful the music is, but its fate on this side of the Atlantic I think would be based on how the book turns out. It's a very serious show and it doesn't have falling chandeliers or a rotating stage to distract like "Phantom" or "Les Miz."
  
  I would give my eye teeth for a Broadway production but I don't think commercial success is a guarantee in NYC. Critical respect, perhaps...Tony nominations for the show, score, Helen and Kevin if they did it, very likely, but big box office, which unfortunately still rules the day, is another issue.

  Whatever some of the critics may have written, I do not think there was anyone who would have liked to leave the Hall early - but then some people had to during the curtain call because of last trains out of NYC...
  
  To me, the atmoshere was fantastic, the performances by an outstanding cast mesmerising, and Helen so deserved that standing ovation in the middle of the second act (unheard of at the CH, I hear). I confess to a few tears...
  
  However, where can Kristina go from here? It is still a 3-hour show (including the interval) which is way too long by Broadway standards, but then I would not want to cut a single song from the already scaled down original version...

  I adore and love the work of Benny Andersson, he's unique, and he's the guy wrote wrote "the soundtrack of our lives", as far as I'm concerned he's bigger than all 4 Beatles together !
  
  And I love the music of KFD, I saw it 7 times in Stockholm, and even though I don't understand Swedish as good as English, the Swedish version had much more integrity and authenticity.
  
  A few songs did not work well in the translated version ('Lice', 'Queen of the Prairie'...).
  As a whole, I feel it missed real emotion (yes I know it was a concert version), there too much bombast, overacting ('You Have To Be There' was great but a little over the top, 'Gold Turns Into Dust' was too fast for me)
  
  I heard a bunch of nice songs but no musical.
  And I don't think it will be a Broadway Musical
  Now I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not...mixed emotions !
  
  Maybe this will grow on me (like Chess, I like it more and more)
  
  Anyway, the best thing I saw this year was not KFD in NY, not the ABBA-Tribute thing in London ("Shaka Can't") but most definitely the BAO concert in Stockholm : a bunch of people who love what they do and show this on stage, play for 4 hours, some old stuff and some new, and a lot of fun.
  
  Apart from that, the behaviour of some fans in NY was really apalling and sad.
  I understand better and better why Agnetha keeps away from the spotlight.
  Some of these 'fans' really should get a life.

  I have read all the comments about the concert, watched the clips on youtube and read some reviews (not all good).
  
  Beeing a Suede I have seen the original musical many times and I have relistened to the 3 CD original recording after the Carnegie hall concert and I still think this musical in it´s original form is a masterpiece in every way.
  
  When Björn wrote the lyrics he said in a documentary he had Vilhelm Mobergs words (the author of the novel)in his head. The lyrics Björn wrote in Swedish are excellent and are so well suited to the music in every way.
  
  In my point of view I do not think the concert version is at all comparable to the actual musical and the english lyrics are not as excellent as the Swedish lyrics although still quite good.
  
  Björn and Benny said they did these two concerts because they wanted to make a recording of the music in english and release it in CD form to "get the music out" to a wider public.
  
  I would advise all negative critics to wait and have an opinion until you have seen the final musical. Kristina will always be a masterpiece even if it will not be a sucess on Broadway.

  I was there on Sept. 24. Here is a bit of why I flew there from Texas to see Kristina.
  
  I had heard of the books, but hadn't read them when I heard of the films in the 70s. I enjoyed the films, but didn't go any farther than that.
  
  Much later, we had a Swedish exchange student living with us. He played GULDET BLEV TIL SAND as a bit of a joke because my name is Christina. I didn't understand the words, but loved the music. I asked him where the song was from and as he explained the musical I said, &quot;I know this story!&quot;
  
  Since it had reentered my life, I decided to finally read the books. They are quite compelling, I think, and give a good description of why one would leave their homeland (in this case, Sweden). Then the books described how it would be for a group with very different reasons to emigrate to make the journey and eventually start a new life in America. I loved the books and looked for the musical to hear the rest of the story from Kristina's point of view (the books continue long past her death).
  
  When I finally got to hear the entire 3-cd set, I was hooked. The music was beautiful and the lyrics really told the story of the conflicted Kristina, who didn't want to leave her life in Sweden but felt compelled to in order to save her children. And the love between her and her husband both saved her and destroyed her. All was shown in the music.
  
  When the Carnegie Hall shows were announced, I had to be there. The audience was enthusiatic for many reasons. I think everyone will have their stories. I talked to two men in the same box as I was. They had driven from California. As the show went on and we experienced its beauty, we became friends. We talked about how it should appeal to an American audience. We are all from immigrants at some point in our past. The story should strike a chord for unjaded souls.
  
  I hope that they musical will be produced on Broadway, but if not, at least I have it running through my mind now!

  Time to digest and assess my Kristina experience. I really enjoyed the concert. It was great to finally expereince the show in English and make more sense of it (without having to paw through distracting translations). The performances were all very very good.
  
  However... even though the translation is excellent, many of the songs still sound translated, if you see what I mean. You Have to Be There is an example. The original lyrics 'fit' the tune, the intonation and phrasing. The English words sometimes sit awkwardly in their place, even if they are the best words the translator could have chosen. In fact, this is nearly always the case with anything translated. There is always something not quite right. It's blindlingly obvious that, if it had been originally written in English, Kristina would be a lot better for an English audience(imagine Chess if it had been translated into English - we'd never have the magical lyrics of Tim Rice to marvel over). For that reason I think Kristina should remain Swedish.

  Well, if you hoping -- as I was -- to put a copy of Kristina @ Carnegie Hall under someone's Christmas tree... you can forget it. The CD (on the Decca Broadway label) won't be released until early 2010. Benny is personally involved in the mixing/mastering process, which is being done at a studio in Sweden, and I'm told he's being a perfectionist about it.

  Early 2010 is fantastic. It took much longer for Chess at Albert Hall and Chess is again headed for Broadway.
  
  Every instinct tells me "Kristina" is his #1 priority because the window is still open for Helen to play the lead if it can be taken to Broadway quick enough.
  
  Benny was believed to have wanted the Broadway Theater last year or the year before but Oprah kept "The Color Purple" running longer than expected.
  
  Right now "Shrek" is running there but it is a Disney production in big trouble (down 5% with a very anemic 62% occupancy.) It's not Disney's style to keep throwing money at a show that appears to have not found an audience.
  
  Of course, no one really knows what Benn and Bjorn have in mind but it seemed so clear to me (and I suppose everyone who saw the concerts that Benny and Bjorn were over the moon with joy during the curtain
  calls. I read one snippet where Benny was said to have declared September 23rd was one of the two happiest nights of his life.

  Who knows how long "Shrek" will occupy the Broadway Theatre, but I can't imagine Disney wanting it to stay there at all, much less be throwing any money at it or even being involved in name only, since it's a production by a competing studio (Dreamworks) and based on a movie that included much material satirizing the Disney animation and theme park empire.
  
  I would assume there are other theaters also suitable for "Kristina" in the New York theater district, but again, who knows which ones will be available when...
  
  Good to hear that Benny is wanting to take great care in producing the CD.

  @ Glenn: Shrek isn't Disney, it's Dreamworks. The movies and the show are decidedly anti-Disney.

  I got home from New York City three days ago after a fantastic stay, and although my "Kristina" concert had begun to fade by the end of the holiday (understandable, as NYC is an intensely rivetting place: I saw and experienced and revisited heaps of interesting things in the 18 or so days following the Carnegie Hall night, after all!). The "Kristina" thing I attended at the beginning of my stay was still a highlight, but it was starting to assume the status of just one highlight among many others.
  
  I had no idea what an incredible recalibration would occur upon returning home, though! "Kristina" leapt back to number one just before I landed, about the same moment the realisation came that I had to snap back into the reality that is the daily routine.
  
  The concert was marvellous and the highlight of the decade for me.
  
  I forgot to mention: did anybody attending the second concert notice the small blooper in "Queen of the Prairie" (Prariens drottning)? The little boy, I'm almost sure, FORGOT to sing his short line! It was hardly noticeable, but from where I was seated (quite close to the stage) his child co-stars gazed fixedly, expectantly, at him when he failed to sing his bit - it looked to be an awkward and embarrassing (especially to self-conscious children) 3 second silence before the other little girl sang her rejoinder to what should have been sung by the boy.
  
  I doubt most of the audience would have noticed this little omission, but I did, and I can imagine Benny and Bjorn - perfectionists that they are - would have squirmed in their seats and planned to thrash the living daylights out of him once the show was over. ;-) lol.
  
  I'm so disappointed to see that all those Youtube clips (of amateur footage) that were recorded over both nights have now been blocked! I do so wish I'd had the presence of mind to download them at the time so I could watch them again today. Damn it!
  
  I can hardly wait to get the official recording now. What's taking them so bloomin' long!! (Just kidding, of course, but others must be impatient, too.)
  
  It was a magnificent event, an unforgettable night, and an incredible honour - one which would have certainly seemed unimaginable to both B&B when they wrote "People Need Love". Who could have foreseen - even as late as 1984, with their "Chess" project - our boys presenting their music to an audience at Carnegie Hall?! Certainly not me! - and this, apart from hearing live that majestic score which I loved already, is one of the main reasons why I absolutely, positively HAD to be there! I needed to be present for this, their singular moment of glory in what has proved to be a fairytale career.
