Stellan Skarsgård hints at Mamma Mia! 2
May 10, 2010
In an interview with Stellan Skarsgård it is revealed by the actor that discussions have taken place, the studio definitely like the idea and it is now down to the creative team ("the three girls") to come up with an idea that everybody likes.
Remember folks, that rumours about a Mamma Mia! 2 will swirl around right up until if/when one is announced and it’s definitely best to take them all with a grain of salt. If, as Stellan mentions, discussions have taken place, then they will be at a very early stage of the process, for sure!
My thanks to Niclas for news of the article.
Hoepefully, it won’t happen!!! Please be so kind and leave us with our gorgeous memories of "Mamma Mia" (part one, if you like…). But then, to provoke the world’s media, let’s ask Benny for a nice comment on a possible reunion of his former band, which of course will record a brand new song exclusively – to avoid any commercial disaster! Then, because of the great success of MM2, his former band is going to re-open the Polar Music Studios in order to record a completely new score for "Mamma Mia!3" Since Agnetha is afraid of flying, her daughter Linda might step in her place to promote the movie even in the most remote areas of this world. And then, finally, Stellan Skarsgard might hint at a possible MM4 if the creative team don’t mind…

N O !
a sequel can only spoil the original – as nothing will ever enhance it . . .
x
I would like the next ABBA related film to be Chess.
I love Mamma mia, but not many sequels enhance the reputation of the original film.
Let’s all remember that B&B themselves have spoken openly on "not doing a sequel for the wrong reasons", so I am positive that a new movie will not be connected to Mamma Mia, but will be something different.
No! No! A thousand times No!
I can’t help but feel that a sequel would take away the credibility of the first film – surely any sequel would only be made for commercial gain, something that B&B repeatedly say is of no importance to them. Stand by your guns, boys….
Please new mamma mia 2 with new benny andersson songs !!!
And The Musical KRISTINA THE MOVIE !!!!!
Helen Sjöholm and Anders Ekborg
I’d love Kristina the movie!!!!!
I thought Benny had said that any follow-up to MM would *not* be based on Abba songs. So, I can only assume that they may write new material for any second film?
Now that would be an exciting prospect.
Lee
Remember "Grease 2"?
If you do, enough said.
If you don’t, enough said.
If, as Lee mentioned, a Mamma Mia! 2 film would not be based on ABBA songs; then I can’t see it as being commercially successful as the first. This is simply due to the fact that the ‘general public’ were initially attracted to Mamma Mia! because the story was ‘based on the songs of ABBA’.
On a completely unrelated note… ‘philsafan’ – have you ever seen the Betty Boop cartoon, ‘No! No! A Thousand Times No!’?
Me too prefere a film from Chess. A good idea.
@Craig – no I haven’t, but it sounds kind of interesting!
It could be a movie based more widely than just one band. How about the songs of the 60s – or the 80s? I could see that working rather well.
ABBA have a large catalogue of tracks. Most of the most popular ones were used in Mamma Mia, therefore a sequel using tracks not in the original film will not be as popular. That being said I would welcome a sequel. There are many gems in their back catalogue, and I feel mistakes were made in the choice of UK singles, for example why they never released "When All is Said and Done" or "If it Wasn’t for the Nights" as UK singles is a mystery to me.
I also think it would be a mistake; and I’d also love to see a Kristina movie; and I also think When All Is Said And Done and If It Wasn’t For The Nights would have been great singles, as well as One Man, One Woman. Seriously underrated.
I Think That Use Other ABBA songs Is The Best Idea
I think there is a very fine balance to play here. We all must understand that Universal are ultimately about commercialism and hard cash. Undoubtedly if they see a cash cow they will milk it. However the very fact that to date no member of the Super Swedes have chosen to or shown any interest in walking this road is hopefully a sign that Benny and Bjorn will veto any exploitation that may tarnish a product that they have all worked so hard to create and protect.
If by chance they do decide to endorse such a project I would trust that their endorsement would mean that it would be worthy of the public and more importantly their fans paying their hard earned cash, and that it would only add to the catalogue of classy well produced art that we all know and love.
Just looking at the gap between bond moves three years between The world is not enough and Die another day four years between Die another day and Casino royal and two years between Casino royal and Quantum of solace, a four year gap between mamia films would men a release date of 2012 would they want to wait longer than that.
It could work, just, but the plot would be so tortuous, being a sequence of situations that happened to fit in with the songs that weren’t in Mamma Mia 1. Meryl Streep singing Happy New Year as the opening credits fade would be plesant enough, and there are some popular songs that weren’t used in MM1 (Knowing Me Knowing You, Angeleyes, Ring Ring…. erm, I Know Him So Well, One Night in Bangkok…) but please spare us Pierce Brosnan’s take on Summer Night City…
MM2 isn’t going to happen. Of course it would have been discusssed, as the first film did such good business. But there’s no way any of those involved would allow it to happen.
From a purely selfish point of view, I’d love to see Chess or Kristina as a movie but neither are commercially viable, unfortunately. Chess will always fall down on its thin story about some not very likable people – it’s the music we adore.
What I’d like to see is the Bs working on a new major work of some kind. If it’s another musical, then soon, as they usually take quite a number of years…
I thihnk Chess would make a great film.
MM2? Doesn’t sound to me like a good idea: to be frank, I don’t even like MM1 really.
Great songs sung poorly – and unappealing characters.
Like Kian, I’d love to see more B&B on film and stage. But the Chess storyline is flawed and Kristina probably too esoteric (I very much hope I’m wrong on this).
The music on both is, however, truly magnificent.
And, of course, I’ve already booked 2 visits (so far) to see Chess – flaws an’ all!

Mamma Mia worked 1st time around and no doubt will be enjoyed for years to come,BUT……..dont spoil a good thing,by trying to go 1 step better. Remember what Benny said about reforming Abba, why try to go 1 step better and spoil what Abba are and were.
