Upcoming ABBA releases – ABBA The Vinyls and ABBA Gold (2010)
ABBA – The Vinyls (Released 6 Dec 2010)
A limited edition box set containing ABBA’s eight studio albums, originally released 1973–1981: Ring Ring, Waterloo, ABBA, Arrival, ABBA: The Album, Voulez Vous, Super Trouper and The Visitors.
The box set also contains a bonus album, entitled ABBA Tracks, the A-side of which contains the five single A-sides not included on the original studio albums. The B-side of ABBA Tracks features a further five non-album songs, personally selected by ABBA’s Benny Andersson.
Going back to the analogue master tapes for each individual album, as originally prepared by ABBA and their associates, the albums in the ABBA: THE VINYLS box set have been remastered for vinyl especially for this release.
The track listings of the albums mirror the original Swedish releases, as originally planned and conceived by ABBA. Similarly, the eight studio albums are presented in replica covers featuring the original art work and inner sleeves – exactly as they looked when they first hit record shops back in the ’70s and early ’80s.
ABBA Gold CD/DVD (UK release 06 Dec 2010)
ABBA’s greatest hits album ABBA Gold, which to date has sold more than 28 million copies worldwide, will be re-released in a brand new ABBA Gold CD/DVD Special Edition on November 29, 2010.
The CD features the latest remastered version of the album, while the DVD features newly remastered versions of all the video clips featured on the original DVD.
The DVD will also include bonus selections in the shape of “before-and-after” split-screen comparisons of five original film clips and the remastered versions of those clips. The new ABBA Gold DVD also features a recently discovered archive find: a cartoon version of ‘Money, Money, Money’, made circa 1977.
This very rare clip of ‘Money, Money, Money’ was made by the Australian production company Reg Grundy’s, but was only ever screened briefly during ABBA’s heyday and has never been seen in complete form since.
The remastering of the ABBA Gold video clips has been made by Cutting Room in Stockholm, Sweden, taking full advantage of the progress in digital technology since the clips were last remastered in 2002. You have never seen them like this before!
ABBA Gold Special Edition also features a brand new essay on the album by Elisabeth Vincentelli, author of the books ABBA Gold and ABBA Treasures.
The ABBA Gold CD/DVD Special Edition will be released in a so-called flip-tray with a slip case. The worldwide release date is November 29, 2010, although dates may vary from territory to territory (i.e. UK December 6, 2010).

I assume that for the Vinyls release that Abba The Album will not be the gatefold sleeve which seems a shame but does anyone know for sure?
Jason
@Jason: they’ll be replicas of the original Polar albums. But the vinyl re-release of ABBA – The Album in 2008 *was* a copy of the Epic gatefold, you should seek it out if you haven’t got it.
Not for sure – but I believe they are based on the original Polar releases as conceived by ABBA. Therefore, The Album will be the white version – with the inner sleeve with the dark blue night sky behind the group.
I always think the Polar Waterloo LP was not so good a design with regards to font. It needed some kind of logo for the group name at least. Rather than it all being on one line at the top and all the same size.
Odd also, they (or Ron Spaulding) chose to use a shot with Frida dashing to get out of the way. I never understood that. There must have been a similar shot to use.
Then there’s Bjorn’s left foot on the back cover of the ABBA LP. And you can see Ola Lager in the reflection of the helicopter on Arrival and that the whole group look cross eyed. And so on blah blah blah..
@ Richard – the reflection of Ola Lager on the Arrival helicopter has me curious as I’ve never noticed this before! Are you referring to the small silhouette of what looks like a head on that box-type thing between the girls near their feet or am I completely missing something here?
Yes, you can see him leaning over the camera as the flash has gone off. A black figure.
For me, "ABBA GOLD DVD" would be perfect if it included DTS 5.1 surround sound. I hope they really have improved video quality.
The Abba Gold CD/DVD Special Edition is now available for order on amazon.co.uk – it’s released on the 6th December at £11.99:

I hope that tracks from “The Album” won’t be badly distorted like they were before. Hopefully the CD will use THE proper stereo mixdown tapes, and not the LP cutting tape, and that a new undistorted LP cutting tape will be prepared for The Album LP version.
Today’s the day! Off to the shops……
Regarding the aspect ratio of the videos Carl Magnus Palm has updated his site:
\The promo clips on ABBA Gold CD/DVD Special Edition have been remastered in the 16:9 format, as opposed to the normal 4:3 format. However, this does not mean that the aspect ratio of the picture has been compromised – on the contrary you get more picture for your money, since the 4:3 frame shaves off some of the original 16mm picture. On the new DVD, the picture takes up more space on the screen, with \black bars\ on either side of the picture.\
Now this sounds very interesting indeed, I always supposed 4:3 was the native format of the videos! Sad to see the DVD is released in the inferior NTSC format though, losing almost 20% of the vertical resolution, kind of ironic for something that’s just been restored like that… Guess we’ll have to put our hopes on a Blu-ray edition.
Got the new Gold CD/DVD. The colours are way too reddish, making the videos look like bad copies.
I’ll stick to the Definitive Collection DVD. Why not waste time and get unseen footage from Wembley and see what can be done with that.
