Upcoming ABBA releases – ABBA The Vinyls and ABBA Gold (2010)
ABBA – The Vinyls (Released 6 Dec 2010)
A limited edition box set containing ABBA’s eight studio albums, originally released 1973–1981: Ring Ring, Waterloo, ABBA, Arrival, ABBA: The Album, Voulez Vous, Super Trouper and The Visitors.
The box set also contains a bonus album, entitled ABBA Tracks, the A-side of which contains the five single A-sides not included on the original studio albums. The B-side of ABBA Tracks features a further five non-album songs, personally selected by ABBA’s Benny Andersson.
Going back to the analogue master tapes for each individual album, as originally prepared by ABBA and their associates, the albums in the ABBA: THE VINYLS box set have been remastered for vinyl especially for this release.
The track listings of the albums mirror the original Swedish releases, as originally planned and conceived by ABBA. Similarly, the eight studio albums are presented in replica covers featuring the original art work and inner sleeves – exactly as they looked when they first hit record shops back in the ’70s and early ’80s.
ABBA Gold CD/DVD (UK release 06 Dec 2010)
ABBA’s greatest hits album ABBA Gold, which to date has sold more than 28 million copies worldwide, will be re-released in a brand new ABBA Gold CD/DVD Special Edition on November 29, 2010.
The CD features the latest remastered version of the album, while the DVD features newly remastered versions of all the video clips featured on the original DVD.
The DVD will also include bonus selections in the shape of “before-and-after” split-screen comparisons of five original film clips and the remastered versions of those clips. The new ABBA Gold DVD also features a recently discovered archive find: a cartoon version of ‘Money, Money, Money’, made circa 1977.
This very rare clip of ‘Money, Money, Money’ was made by the Australian production company Reg Grundy’s, but was only ever screened briefly during ABBA’s heyday and has never been seen in complete form since.
The remastering of the ABBA Gold video clips has been made by Cutting Room in Stockholm, Sweden, taking full advantage of the progress in digital technology since the clips were last remastered in 2002. You have never seen them like this before!
ABBA Gold Special Edition also features a brand new essay on the album by Elisabeth Vincentelli, author of the books ABBA Gold and ABBA Treasures.
The ABBA Gold CD/DVD Special Edition will be released in a so-called flip-tray with a slip case. The worldwide release date is November 29, 2010, although dates may vary from territory to territory (i.e. UK December 6, 2010).

Never thought I would buy another edition of ABBA Gold but hey-ho this one looks very appealing. No doubt the release date will tie in with the new ITV special.
With good timing and the TV show we may well see Gold reach number one again and generate more ABBA coverage. Has one album ever come out in so many versions! does worry me a bit that the 28 million copies sold are actually about 5 million fans just buying different versions over the years -Think I have vinyl, cassette!, original CD, reissue cd, signed cover cd, cd/dvd gold cover release and Australian version with some different tracks which makes 7 and new version will make 8 – any advance out there ?
Will be good to see feedback on the vinyls – we knew they were coming but its a slightly expensive set for records most of us can no longer play – the getting your name in the tie in book is a catch but undecided at the moment. Would have been nice to have something a bit different on this – the 5 tracks chosen by Benny are just b sides so does not give us any real feedback from him – possibly a extra album with the fave tracks from all four would have been great and made a nice exclusive which this set does seem to be lacking at the moment – unless members feedback they are buying it may hold off but unless we order by the 25th we dont get our names in the book!
It is my understanding that Side ‘A’ of the
‘ABBA Tracks’ Vinyl Album has these ABBA Singles
on it:,
1) Fernando
2) Summer Night City
3) Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
4) The Day Before You Came
5) Under Attack
Side ‘B’ has these Songs on it:,
1) Happy Hawaii
2) Lovelight
3) Elaine
4) Put On Your White Sombrero
5) Should I Laugh Or Cry
The Side ‘B’ Songs were chosen by
Benny. He decided not to include
‘Cassandra’, or ‘You Owe Me One’.
StephenUK, it is unlikely that ‘Gold’ will go
to No.1 again, in the UK. It has been to No.1
five times in the past, & has now sold almost
4,800,000 UK copies.
It is on 433 Top 75 Weeks – 214 of them in the
Top 40. It holds the Album Chart Record, for the
most Top 40 Weeks, for an Album by a Group. The
previous Record Holder was, ‘The Dark Side Of
The Moon’, by Pink Floyd – 211 Top 40 Weeks.
If ‘Gold’ can manage just 1 more Top 40 Week,
it will become the ‘Hits’ Album with the most.
At present, it is equal 1st with ‘Greatest Hits’, by Simon & Garfunkel – 214 Weeks each.
If the ABBA Compilation can manage just 8
more Top 75 Weeks, it becomes THE all time
Top 75 Album in the UK. At present, its 433
Top 75 Weeks have it in 2nd place. 1st is
‘Bat Out Of Hell’, by Meat Loaf – 440 Weeks.
So, ‘Gold’ may well break those 2 UK Chart
Records – if Universal Promote the November
CD/DVD properly.
Thanks Colin
– you have given me the perfect excuse to buy these – but also looking forward to remastered videos!
Or for true authenticity just pop down to your local cancer research/heart foundation/oxfam etc shop and pick up the actual ORIGINAL vinyl albums for a fraction of the price and help a good cause. If Benny really was involved then am a bit shocked yet another re re re re release has been sanctioned and yet the unreleased stuff (we all know what I mean) which, if added may actually make this a worthwhile purchase) has been exceeded again. WON’t be buying.
Just wanted to say thanks to Colin – nice bit of info to add interet when this gets released. Another couple of reasons to get excited for wanting it to succeed – again!
Also, what a neat idea of Stephen’s that would have been – getting all four to choose their favourite tracks for one of the discs. Again, that would have tied in nicely with the up coming ITV show. Maybe it’s not too late….. Anyone know anyone….??
Just a thought – if you don’t have state-of-the art / top of the range Hi Fi / DVD stuff, do you get to benefit from improved/updated recordings?? Would you hear any difference when playing the new releases on the same old equip??
Thanks Colin for the updates – what I meant about the Benny songs was when reading about the set it sounds like Benny was chosing his fave top 5 ABBA songs – there would have been have been duplication from the albums but it would have made that album side unique for us – where as it is likely they would have put most of those B sides on without his input. At the moment apart from the chance to have your name in the same book as ABBA albums there does not seem any reason to buy as most of us will have treasured vinyl albums from the time which will always hold more memories than this box set ever could – agree with Colin the Bruce about the originals popping up in charity shops but have noticed over recent months all vinyl has shown marked increased from being a 99p bargain to most asking £5 – £10 for original copies – I always make sure if there is one that its goes to the front of the display!.
I remember seeing the cartoon version of MMM in the original TV special
This will make the purchase of this edition worth it on its own!
Reply to Russell:
It’s hard to say what the sound quality will be like – it depends on what tapes were used for the mastering. On the evidence of past remasters, I’d say the originals would offer better sound quality – not one set of ABBA remasters to CD has been without its problems so far.
That said, though, the problem with old vinyl is finding copies that haven’t been well played, with all the crackle, hiss and pops of old, dusty vinyl!
Let’s just say I’ve already signed up for this set, because I love vinyl and I’m willing to give the new masters a go. Hopefully the remasters will be faithful to the originals and not compressed to the max or any of the other sins seen (okay then, heard!) in the previous Polygram/Universal remasters. But nothing will ever part me from my old vinyls.. 🙂
Hi Colinthebruce. That’s a great suggestion: going to charity shops to buy copies of the originals. Actually, that would have been a nice spin: if profits from ‘The Vinyls’ collection went to charity (or charities). I won’t be buying this either, as I went past the O.D. ‘purchase-bug’ a few years ago. The only time I buy something now is if there is something new (eg: ‘ABBA in Japan’), or if there are substantial additions in a re-release (like the wonderful 31st Anniversary release of the ‘Voulez Vous’ album).
(P.S. I think it’s a pity that Benny apparently isn’t keen on ‘You Owe Me One’. I think that it’s a fun song; a break from the serious themes of most of ABBA’s latter songs …although, of course, I love those songs too ;o)
Since when was Put on your white sombrero ever a B-side??
I can still play vinyl but I will not be buying.
@ StephenUK – including the CD’s, cassette and vinyl, this will be my 22nd edition of Gold since 1992 (if you include the Spanish Oro)!!
Any advances on that?! : )
I’m a sucker for vinyl and having a top end hi-fi does help as it separates the multiple layers of the Abba recording techniques better giving greater insight into what was really going on.
Years ago I bough a "Nautilus" (high quality, taken from master tapes, half speed mastered vinyl) of Abba Arrival which was taken from the master tape and pressed on virgin vinyl … The sound compared to the UK Epic pressing and a German Polydor pressing was a vast improvement with less back ground noise, better bass and more detail being revealed so, for me, its going to be very interesting to see what these are like.
I hope Universal don’t skimp on this as I have at least 2 or three copies of each album so I have lots to compare them with. Now, am I going to buy a Linn Sondek to really appreciate them. But DONT tell the other half !!!!
On the other side, it’s the first time "Put on your White Sombrero" is available on vinyl ;o)
Whether you decide to buy the Vinyl Box or not is only a matter of collecting or not.
That’s all very well to read that the tapes are remastered but I have dozen of ABBA vinyl LPs that I bought for a beautiful sleeve or just because it was manufactured in Venezuela ! And I’m not ashamed to say that I didn’t play it to check if Waterloo or Fernando sounded different.
Now, I can’t deny that it’s a bit sad that "they" (whoever decides) don’t offer a rare track on the Vinyl Box like they do with the MMM cartoon on the new Gold package.
Thanks Sian for coming back to me.
I have still got all the original vinyls. Because I was into my music as a kid, I looked after them, and still play them when I want to remember hearing them as they were. Like everyone else, I got CD copies and replicated them along the way – in case I was going to miss out on something. So,sadly, I won’t be buying this re-hash, or any other unless there is something honestly different about any future release – perhaps as Stephen suggested, a personnal selection with some expanatory notes, or, dare I suggest, at the risk of sounding ungrateful, the inclusion of a full length, previously un released track…..?
I will get the new Gold though, as there is something new being offered hear- the mmm cartoon! Thanks very much for that! Looking forward to it!
Do they need money AGAIN ???
Let them release something new or something never released before
But not over and over again the same
Am I the only one who is bewildered by those who complain every time a new edition of an album comes out? Personally, I think it’s wonderful that there’s continuing demand for Abba and that their products aren’t left to fall behind ever-increasing expectations and technologies. Nobody is forcing any of us to buy anything, why not just enjoy that our favourite group is being promoted again?
I have all the original vinyls in great conditions…..won’t buy this forthcoming box.
I would prefer a DVD box set with all the TV specials Abba made during their carreer…especially the German and Australian TV specials from early 1976 as well as the Ploish Tv special from october 1976…that I would buy for sure…
that would be 10.000 times more exciting than this vinyls re=release……
When they say "The latest remasters of the album tracks" do they mean those God awful LOUDNESS WARRED ones on the 2008 version? Or are we getting new ones similar to the latest VV ones?
It is ok that these albums en cd’s are renewed every few years. ABBA are stil very populair so it’s ok to re-release these recordings over and over again. You don’t have to buy them. It’s wonderful for me personaly that ABBA so many years after winning the Eurovision Songcontest stil sells a lot of records. ABBA is the best thing that ever happend to me. I am now 50 years old an 36 years ABBA fan.

Russell:
I did that too, but so far I’ve been very underwhelmed by the remastering on the ABBA back catalogue. Especially the Astley remasters. It’s nice in a way to hear nuances that were barely there on the vinyls, but not to the point where it changes the "sound" of the track completely. Lovelight is a case in point. Those strident backing vocals on the CDs were barely heard in the originals.
Greg H:
I just looked – I think I have 33 copies of Gold in its various guises. Ah, the joys of being "out" as an ABBA fan and ABBA releasing a new, high-profile collection. 😉 Might be one or two others about the place, but I must admit Gold is probably my least favourite ABBA release so I don’t really care. 😀
Kian:
Well said! I agree completely. Wouldn’t it be awful if ABBA were just left to be forgotten over time? Or worse, if their old tapes were left to deteriorate beyond the point where they could be played again? It’s great that someone is making the effort to keep the ABBA magic alive by transferring their works to more modern media and promoting them by releasing new items.
I also think it’s nice that Universal have bothered to think about the fans this time, too. Gold is carrying a video many people won’t have seen. And the vinyls are obviously aimed only at die-hards and audiophiles – no casual fan will cough up £125 for a box of records they can buy in second-hand shops for a few quid each. Let’s hope the sound quality on the vinyls is amazing.
I think it’s fab that they’ve restored the original artwork, too (a personal bugbear of mine has always been the tampering with the artwork on the CD releases!), and that they’ve bothered to recreate the original sleeve inners. I already have all these anyway, but if the vinyls released by Polygram a few years ago are anything to go by, the new copies will use much better quality card and vinyl. Well – for £125 they’d better, anyway!! :;)
I well remember the excitement of buying a new ABBA album, the fun of poring over the sleeve and reading the lyrics from the sleeve inner. The CD generation don’t know what they missed! 🙂 It is a shame the vinyls will only be released in a set, though – it prices them out of reach of many people.
It would have been awesome if they would have put the videos to the new tv screen format ! that would give many buyers (including me !)
@ Mark, from what I have read, the videos have been remastered for the first time in 16:9 ratio (with black bars on either side, according to Carl Magnus Palm) so this new aspect sounds rather exciting if we’re not losing too much of the original picture!
http://www.carlmagnuspalm.com/abba/compilations-and-box-sets/abba-gold-cddvd-special-edition/abba-gold-cddvd-special-edition-more-details
Just had the email from the ABBA site and was wondering about the wording reference the Vinyls as being one of the "first" 2000 and you get your name in the book. By that I am taking that they will print up to 2000 names in the book but the actual edition of the albums maybe more than 2000 if sales are strong enough. Do we know if the set is just 2000 units total or a "open" numbered limited edition like the thank you for the music set was.
@Greg H: You’re right and now that’s a VERY strange and stupid decision – what’s the point in restoring the clips again, just to put black bars on the sides meaning the actual resolution of the videos will be much lower than on previous DVDs?!? (I never had a problem watching 4:3 material on my 16:9 TV as the bars are simply put there automatically by the TV/DVD player, sure no need to hardcode them into the actual DVD disc.)
Thinking about it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a DVD with black bars on the sides – it’s either on top/bottom or it’s anamorphic – maybe Carl Magnus are talking about a forthcoming Blu-Ray adaption, as black bars on the sides is the only way to present 4:3 content on that format?
I have just pre-ordered my ABBA The Vinyls Box Set. Making sure to do it before the deadline of 25 September. Then I noticed the deadline has now been extended to 1 October! Does this mean they haven’t yet receive 2000 orders? I am also wondering if it is limited to 2000 or more. There I was panicking as I didn’t have enough money in my account until today – the day before the deadline and I could have relaxed – as there’s now another week.
I don’t know why Benny is so against You Owe Me One. Techincally it’s the very last track ABBA released as an active group. I think it’s fun. I wonder if Dum Dum Diddle wasn’t part of an album – how he’d feel about it? Would it be excluded?
Very good point Richard, it’s very annoying when ABBA (and other artists) choose to re-write history, simply because they don’t like this or that track!
Personally, im looking forward to the box set as I love vinyl, someone mentioned that its a shame that thee are not being issued individually, but a few years back the issued the albums on heavy vinyl so there were those. I agree something new would have been nice, but they are going fora premium collector edition I think rather than a general release, so this for me is nice and a must have. I dont think that it will be limited to 2000, but at some point they need to have all the names before sending to the printer so a deadline is nesessary. Anyhow I think it looks great and look forward to receiving it. Great addition to my collection, and I agree with what someone mentioned earlier with CD you miss out on the beauty of the album artwork, as a child and now I love reading and looking at the LP and packaging while the album is playing. and coloured vinyl dont get me onto that, love it 🙂
What?!, "Put On Your White Sombrero" instead of "Cassandra"?? Hello?
I will not complain for the re-re-re-re… release of Gold, but can I ask WHEN will be out a Cd with some demos, unreleased mixes and unreleased tracks PLEASE?
I have to say, ungrateful though it may sound, I totally agree with Christian. In my opinion, Cassandra is by far the better song, and better version of the same song. It is one of my firm favourites. Ironically though, when Agnetha joins Frida in the third verse, this for me, is the very best example of what the two voices together, were all about. The sound is breathtaking and the effect and result, unsurpassable. Cassandra blew me away when I first heard it, and still does today. Frida is in the finest of forms on this. My two penneth worth!!
Well I probably will buy the vinyl set, as thats my passion for collecting! However as always nothing new and £125 Ouuuccchhh!
The vinyls should have all been in picture disc format. Now that would have been really special 🙂
The pre-order closing date has been extended to October 7th now. Seems they can’t have been getting that many orders! Well either that or it’s a ploy to get more orders in even though they already have 2000 names for the book. It doesn’t seem that it’s guaranteed your name will be included, after all.
Because the Official Chart Company, (The OCC),
has strict Rules about what can be allowed
into the UK Album Chart, I sent them full
details of the November 2010 ‘Gold’ – to see
if they’d accept it as an Album, or if they’d
‘banish’ it into the Music DVD Chart.
I was rather worried, as of the 44 Tracks
in it, no less than 25 are DVD Clips, & ‘only’
19 are CD Tracks.
However, The OCC have replied – 2 Guys there
– and each told me that they WILL be letting
the 2010 ‘Gold’ into the Album Chart. What’s
more, they tell me that they will add its Sales
& Chart Positions to those of the previous ‘Gold’
Editions – as they did when it was released as
a UK CD/DVD in 2004. That Edition reached No.4,
& sold over 360,000 here.
The 2010 ‘Gold’ is released on Monday 29th
November, & ‘The Nation’s Favourite ABBA Song’,
will be shown on ITV1 on Sunday December 5th.
So – hopefully – both the TV adverts for the
Show, & the Show itself, will create lots of interest in the ‘New’ Edition of ‘Gold’, & it
will re-enter the UK Top 75. (1 more Top 40
Week, & it breaks a UK Chart Record. 8 more
Top 75 Weeks, & it breaks an even bigger UK
Chart Record).
Well done Colin. Thanks for sharing that. It’s always good to be able to look forward to seeing and hoping that your purchase will help towards chart figures and a real result that everyone will see. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Cheers.
Colin…
Just a thought. Is there a better time to buy the CD in terms of impact on the chart? So, would it make any difference strategically whether purchases were made on the release day or, directly after the TV prog?
Just wondered…
Even with the previous sales it will be worrying if Gold doesn’t make a return for at least the one week on the back of the new version, TV ads and a TV show. With it being an ideal Christmas present I would hope we would see it there for December at least – the next version in 2012 should give the extra weeks it needs for the other UK record!
It was nice to get the Email from "ABBA" about the vinyl set today but I do think saying that you will be "immortalised" by having you name in the book is a bit overkill. Its a pity they are not providing more info on the book and what will be in it as its really the only thing which might switch some fans to buy this set – it would be nice to have it really has nothing new about it – when they did the boxed singles sets they either had the UK novelty of blue vinyl and picture sleeves and the European one had the extra Waterloo single. If the book does contain exclusive pictures or interviews and is not mass released after would be the only thing special about the set.
Here’s to GOLD being the Christmas number one album in the UK. It should pass the five million mark surely.
Heres to seeing my name in the booklet of The Vinyls.
Here’s to us – one more toast to icethesite!
Cheers Richard! I’ll drink to that 😉
Russell – Although the 2010 ‘Gold’
will likely enter the UK Top 75 on Sunday
5th December, it is better to buy it from
Monday 6th December onwards – especially
during the Week of Monday 6th to Saturday
11th December. The December 5th TV Show
will raise Sales for those 6 days, & it
will give the ABBA Album a better chance
of a higher placing in the Sunday 12th
December UK Album Chart.
However – I’m a little worried, in that
Amazon.uk still do not have the 2010 ‘Gold’
mentioned as a forthcoming release. I do hope
that it is actually coming out in the UK. (The
German Amazon Site do mention it).
I can find no trace of the release on any
UK CD Site – HMV, ASDA, & WH Smith, seem unaware
of it, too.
Yet, elsewhere, I read that Universal want
to use the TV Show to promote the 2010 ‘Gold’.
As the Show is only being shown in the UK, I
cannot believe that the 2010 Edition may not
even be released here.
It will only do well in the UK Charts if
many of the people who already have it,
buy the 2010 Edition. This will not happen
if the UK has no 2010 Edition to buy.
Colin…
Cheers for that. In you opinion, who can we badger in advance? The names you mentioned – HMV, ASDA etc ? – or is there a better approach.
Best
R
Russell – if anyone knows anyone at Universal,
it is better to ask the Record Company directly, if the 2010 ‘Gold’ will be a UK Release.
I know no-one at Universal.
Hi everyone, I’m still over the moon with Frida’s –
Morning has broken then I find out about this box set of vinyls being released. Well like a few of you others have mentioned how you still have the original vinyls when they were released, well I do too then back in the 90’s I think they were all re-released again so I re-bought all of those without opening them so they’d stay brand new I have collected ABBA memorabilia since I was 8 yrs old so have quite a bit LOL, I am mainly interested in this because of the dvd that comes with it ( especially the MMM cartoon ( I’m still wrapped about the Happy Hawaii cartoon on the 30th anniversary cd / dvd ( what happened to the RR, waterloo, ABBA , Voules Vouz, Super trooper and Visitors ( next yr ) anniversary releases which are accompanied by a dvd of tv shows released around the same time as the original albums, as we know there would be so many choices to pick from like ABBA in Switzerland , The Spanish tv shows like 300 Millionoss ( spelling ) MORE fottage from the 79 concerts, if they can show a snippe of KMKY , Eagle , TACOM etc…well where’s the rest? How can half of the footage of 1 song just disappear? We are not fools LOL, Look at THE MOVIE, 55 hours of film footage was taken and look how much is in THE MOVIE so Where’s the rest? The problem is it seems that our fab four just don’t realise us true original diehards just want to see more and more and more whether it’s cutouts from tv shows , studio footage, ANYTHING – PLEASE guys, we NEED more LOL. I was an Aussie kid who was obsessed with ABBA ( mainly Frida as to me her voice is hypnotic and I sort of go into a trance especially when she / both sing LIVE, that gutsy vibrato special sound they made is unique, spectacular, mesmorising and did I mention Hypnotic, yes I did 🙂 I’m sure they were sent down from above as we all learnt in THE MOVIE what the real meaning of the word ABBA means 😀 That probably explains that happy , bubbly uplifting feeling you get when watching and listening to them.As us diehards know there is definately something about them, and there has never been anything like them since and I don’t think there ever will be, I already have my 2 ABBA funeral songs chosen when it’s my time up, I don’t know what I’m going to do when one of them leaves us, especially Frida, Life certainly will not be the same that’s for sure. I was lucky enough to see ABBA twice when they toured Australia back in 77, even though I was just turned 10 the December before,I vividly remember the dry ice and the sound of the helicopter getting closer, never since have I been so numbingly excited LOL and whilst they were singing I kept nudging my sister saying " That voice That voice lol " Pure magic indeed. When they were both going full pelt with that gutsy vibrato sound it sounded like there was a 3rd voice coming through too, I’ve never heard that either since.
Thanks for listening to my babble and I hope I can purchase this box set from Australia? And my final thoughts are ABBA will never fade away or be forgotten, they will live for On and On and On 🙂
Their music is ageless and they are just too good and they were like they said in the National tv commercials down here in Oz , Slghtly ahead of their time. Need I say more. Thanks for reading.
Love and peace to all – Matt 🙂
I decided that Carl Magnus Palm would know
if the 2010 ‘Gold’ will be released in the UK.
I’ve asked him in an E-mail. He’s replied.
He says that it is definitely IS going to
be released in the UK.
So – that’s a relief!
@Matthew McKinnon: Voulez-Vous Deluxe Edition with ABBA in Switzerland and more was released in June this year.
You can order The Vinyl Collection box set in Australia from http://getmusic.com.au/artist/music/detail.aspx?pid=68299&aid=35730. Too late for the first 2,000 orders though.
Colin…
Cheers for the leg work. I’ll be buying mine then, on Dec 6th.
Big thanks!!
It takes time for sites like HMV, Play etc to add all new releases. The new GOLD CD will be a big thing in the UK. I will wait till after the TV show and then order mine, so to maximise the sales potential fot this new edition. Also be great to see how the video’s look. All we need now is a super dupper Blu-ray of the vids…..
