Ten years ago Swedish politician Anna Lindh died from stab wounds following a knife attack on the streets of Stockholm. This week she is being remembered in a variety of ways by a host of Swedish celebrities and political figures from around the world. Benny Andersson has joined those honouring her memory.
Last night, Benny, together with his band the Benny Andersson Orkester and Helen Sjöholm, performed two songs, Bortom sol och måne and Saknadens rum, at a grand memorial concert.
The event, which was broadcast live on Sweden’s TV4, included personal tributes from the former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former British Cabinet Minister Jack Straw, along with performances by the cream of Swedish artists including Eva Dahlgren, the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest winner Loreen, and the Stockholm Sinfonietta conducted by Anders Eljas.
Earlier in the week, Benny had attended ‘an evening of reflection’ in Stockholm’s Katerina church. During the service of remembrance, he played a few bars of Saknadens rum as former party leader Mona Sahlin took the rostrum. After her eulogy, Benny, accompanied only by choristers, gave a very poignant performance of Kärlekens tid.
A clip of the service featuring Benny’s contribution can be viewed on TV4 play until 9 October 2013 by following the link below.
A new SVT documentary about Anna Lindh’s career and premature death, Anna Lindh 1957-2003, will air on 11 September at 8pm on SVT 1.
